わが国の各地をはじめ、世界中に広く分布しています。岩上や腐植土の上に生え、高さは２～３センチになります。葉は倒卵形で深緑色から暗緑色、先端が尖ります。雌雄異株です。春から夏にかけて胞子体を形成します。胞子体は３センチほどの赤い蒴柄をもち、その先端に蒴がつきます。

The capillary thread-moss (Bryum capillare) belongs to the Bryaceae family. It is a bryopsida (moss) that is distributed throughout Japan, as well as widely in the world. This moss grows on rocks and humic soils, and can reach 2-3 cm in height. The leaves are obovate, dark green to bottle green with acute tips. Iti s dioecious. The sporophytes are borne from spring to summer. They have red stalks about 3 cm long and the capsules are arranged atop of stalks.
