わが国が原産の柑橘系の果樹です。発見されたのは江戸時代の終わり、広島県因島市田熊町の浄土寺に実生から成長した原木がありました。いまでは「ぶんたん（Citrus grandis）」の雑種と考えられています。５月ごろに芳香のある白い花を咲かせ、果実は１２月には熟します。ふつうは収穫後、しばらく酸抜きのために貯蔵してから出荷するそうです。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑低木で、学名は Citrus hassaku。英名は Hassaku orange。

The hassaku orange (Citrus hassaku) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Japan. The tree from the original seed was discoverd in the Jodo temple at Taguma-town of Innoshima City of Hiroshima Prefecture in the last days of Edo Era (about 150 years ago). It is thought that the Hassaku orange is a hybrid of "Buntan" (Citrus grandis). Fragrant white flowers come in May and the fruits ripen in December. Fruits are usually shipped after storage for acid reducing.
