はすのはぎり (蓮の葉桐) [Index] [Back] わが国の南西諸島と小笠原諸島、熱帯アジア、ポリネシア、オーストラリアそれに東部アフリカに分布しています。海岸に生え、高さは５〜２０メートルになります。葉は革質の広卵形で互生し、「はす（蓮）」の葉に似ています。１０月から１１月ごろ、白色の花をさせます。雄花は３弁花で、雌花は４弁花です。果実は有毒な核果で、周りを巾着袋のような半透明の小苞が被っています。  ハスノハギリ科ハスノハギリ属の常緑高木で、学名は Hernandia nymphaeifolia。英名は Chinese lantern tree。  The Chinese lantern tree (Hernandia nymphaeifolia) belongs to the Hernandiaceae family. It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands, as well as tropical Asia, Polynesia, Australia and eastern Africa. This tree grows in coastal areas and it can reach 5-20 m in height. The leaves are leathery, broad ovate, alternate and resemble to Lotus. The white flowers bloom from October to November. The male flower is having three petals and the female one is having four petals.
