The Chinese lantern tree (Hernandia nymphaeifolia) belongs to the Hernandiaceae family. It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands, as well as tropical Asia, Polynesia, Australia and eastern Africa. This tree grows in coastal areas and it can reach 5-20 m in height. The leaves are leathery, broad ovate, alternate and resemble to Lotus. The white flowers bloom from October to November. The male flower is having three petals and the female one is having four petals. The fruits are poisonous drupes which surround with drawstring bag-like, translucence bractlets.
