わが国在来の白蓮系八重咲き品種です。その中では最も小型で、高さは４０センチほどにしかなりません。花冠は直径８〜１２センチ、花弁数は８０個ほどで、やや緑色を帯びます。つぼみは球形に近く、平開しないこともあるそうです。別名で「しらたまはす（白玉蓮）」とも呼ばれます。

The Sacred water lotus 'Kanren' (Nelumbo nucifera cv. Kanren) belongs to Nelumbonaceae (the Lotus family). It is a perennial herb that is a double-flowered variety of white flowered Sacred water lotus native to Japan. It is the smallest of them all, reaching a height of only about 40 cm. The corolla is 8 to 12 cm in diameter with about 80 petals and a slightly greenish color. The buds are nearly spherical and sometimes do not open flat. It is also known as "Shiratama-hasu" in Japan.
