わが国では北海道東部に限られますが、ユーラシア大陸や北アメリカ北部に広く分布しています。低地の湿った草地や川沿いなどに生え、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。地下茎を伸ばして広がります。根生葉は１〜２回羽状複葉で小葉は倒卵形、茎葉は羽状複葉で小葉は線形です。４月から５月ごろ、茎頂に薄紫色から白色の十字形の花を咲かせます。氷河期の遺存種だそうです。

アブラナ科タネツケバナ属の多年草で、学名は Cardamine pratensis。英名は Cuckoo flower、Lady's smock。

The Cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern Hokkaido of Japan, as well as Eurasian Continent and northern North America. This herb grows in lowland moist grasslands and along streams, and it can reach 30-45 cm in height. It spreads by underground roots. The basal leaves are once to twice pinnately compound with obovate leaflets. The cauline leaves are pinnately compound with linear leaflets. The pale purple to white, flat cruciate flowers bloom atop of stems from April to May. This plant is a relict species of glacial age.
