The Fragrant false garlic (Nothoscordum fragrans) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Argentina in South America. It is now distributed throughout the world. It has become naturalized in Japan as well, and grows along roadsides, in meadows, and in fields. It grows 30-60 cm tall and produces small white flowers in a rasiate pattern on long, slender flower stalks from May to June. Its Japanese name comes from its leaves, which have a fragrance similar to that of Chinese chives.
