わが国の伊豆諸島だけに分布しています。常緑樹林の林内や林縁に生え、高さは50〜150センチになります。葉は卵形から倒卵形、やや肉質で棘があまり発達せず、互生します。根生葉は花期にはふつうありません。9月から11月ごろ、茎頂に紅紫色の頭花を咲かせます。総苞は、椀形から鐘形です。

キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium hachijoense。英名はありません。

The "Hachijo-azami" (Cirsium hachijoense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to the Izu Islands of Japan. This herb grows in floors or edges of evergreen forests, and can reach 50-150 cm in height. The leaves are ovate to obovate, semi-fleshy with undeveloped spines, and arranged in opposite. The basal leaves blight usually in flower season. The magenta flower-heads bloom on the stem apices from September to November. The bracts are saucer-shaped to bell-shaped.
