"Hachijo-shoma" (Astilbe thunbergii var. hachijoensis) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to the Izu Islands, and distributed to Hachijo, Mikura and Miyake Island. It is a variety of "Aka-shoma". This herb grows on rocky places of mountains and can reach 50-70 cm in height. The leaves are tetraternate compound with elliptic leaflets which have double-serrated margins. The panicles are borne at the top of stems and the numerous, small, white flowers bloom in June through July. The fruits are capsules.
