わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州、それに中国南部からベトナム北部に分布しています。開けた森林に生え、高さは５０〜８０センチになります。葉は長楕円形から卵状長楕円形の２回羽状全裂です。葉柄は淡緑色ですが基部は褐色を帯びることがあり、また鱗片は淡褐色から黒褐色、早落性です。本種は羽片数が７〜９対と多く、羽軸に対する羽片の角度が６０〜７０°と狭いのが特徴です。胞子嚢群は裂片の辺縁につき線形です。中国語では「斜羽鳳尾蕨（xie yu feng wei jue）」と呼ばれます。

イノモトソウ科イノモトソウ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Pteris oshimensis。英名はありません。

The "Hachijo-shida-modoki" (Pteris oshimensis) belongs to the Pteridaceae family. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the Kanto region on Honshu, westward to Shikoku and Kyushu, and from southern China to northern Vietnam. It grows in open forests and reaches a height of 50 to 80 cm. The leaves are oblong to ovate-oblong and twice pinnately compound. The petioles are pale green, though the bases may have a brownish tinge; the scales are pale brown to dark brown and fall off early. This species is characterized by a large number of pinnae (7 to 9 pairs) and a narrow angle of 60-70° between the pinnae and the rachis. The sori are linear and located along the margins of the lobes. In Chinese, it is called "斜羽鳳尾蕨" (xie yu feng wei jue).
