"Hachijo-susuki" (Miscanthus condensatus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu, the Ryukyu Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, Taiwan and Philippinne. This herb grows in coastal scrags and can reach 1-2.5 m in height. The stems are thick, up to 2 cm across at the bases and clumping. The leaves are 1.5-4 cm wide with smooth edges. The white hairs are borne densely at the bases of leaves. The panicles come in August through October. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is "八丈芒". It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
