北アメリカが原産です。「ポインセチア」と同じ仲間で、高さは８０〜１００センチになります。葉は長楕円形ですが、夏の終わりごろから、上部の苞葉に白い縁取りが始まります。花は小さく、淡黄白色をしています。和名は、初雪が降りたように見えることから。切り口からでる乳白色の汁液に、被れることもあるそうです。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の一年草で、学名は Euphorbia marginata。英名は Mountain snow。

The Mountain snow (Euphorbia marginata) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). This herb can reach 80-100 cm in height. The leaves are oblong and the upper bracts begin to white outlining in late summer. The flowers are small and pale yellow-white. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that it looks like the first snow has fallen. The poisonous white sap ooze when breaked a stem and leaf cause a skin irritation.
