The Hopseed bush (Dodonaea viscosa var. angustifolia) belongs to Sapindaceae (the Soapberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is widely distributed in the Nansei and Ogasawara Islands of Japan, as well as Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, and tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It grows along the coast and is 3 to 5 m tall. The leaves are linear-oblong, and alternate. In early summer, it produces panicles of inconspicuous yellow-green flowers. The fruit is a winged fruit with three to four flat wings. The Japanese name is derived from the winged fruit, which resembles a tengu's feather fan. The photo shows the horticultural variety 'Purpurea', which has copper-green leaves that turn dark reddish purple in autumn. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "車桑子".
