「みつばつつじ」の変種で、九州の鹿児島県に分布しています。丘陵から山地の岩場などに生え、高さは２〜３メートルになります。葉は丸みを帯びたひし形で、光沢があり、枝先に３輪生します。２月から３月ごろ、枝先に紅紫色の花を１〜３個咲かせます。雄しべは１０個あります。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron dilatatum var. satsumense。英名はありません。

"Hayato-mitsuba-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron dilatatum var. satsumense) belongs to the Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a viriety of "Mitsuba-tsutsuji". It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Kagashima Prefecture of Kyushu. This tree grows in hillside to montane rocky places, and can reach 2-3 m in height. The leaves are rounded diamond, glossy, and three whorled at the terminal twigs. The 1-3 magenta flowers bloom at the terminal twigs from February to March. The flower has ten stamens.
