ヨーロッパアルプスの「エーデルワイス」に近縁で、「遠野物語」の舞台、岩手県の早池峰山の蛇紋岩地帯に特産します。全体が灰白色の綿毛に被われ、花茎は１０〜２０センチほどに伸びます。花期は７月から８月ごろ、黄色い頭花が集まってつきますが、白い星形の花のように見えるのは苞葉です。

キク科ウスユキソウ属の多年草で、学名は Leontopodium hayachinense。英名はありません。

"Hayachine-usuyuki-so" (Leontopodium hayachinense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is closely related to the edelweiss in the European Alps, and native to the serpentine area in Mount Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture where is the stage of "Tohno monogatari". The whole plant is covered with grayish white fuzz and the flowerling stalk grows up 10-20 cm in height. This flowers bloom from July to August. The flower consists of aggregate flower-heads with white asteroid, petaloid bracts.
