はやとうり（隼人瓜）

熱帯アメリカが原産で、わが国へは大正６年、鹿児島に導入されました。名前は薩摩隼人（さつまはやと）から。蔓性で雌雄同株です。１０月から１１月ごろ、洋なしに似た果実がなります。「しろうり」と同じようなレシピで食用とされます。種子は果実の中にひとつあり、果実の養分だけで生き続けて発芽します。 |

ウリ科ハヤトウリ属の多年草で、学名は Sechim edule。英名は Choko。 |

The Choko (Sechim edule) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the tropical Americas. This herb was introdeced into Kagoshima of Japan in 1917. It is a climbing plant and monoecious. It produces pear-like fruits from October to November. This fruits are edible and used in a cuisine in common with "Shiro-uri" (Cucumis melo var. conomon). The one seed is contained in fruit and germinates only in the nutrients of fruit. |
