The McKittrick pennyroyal (Hedeoma apiculatum) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the south-central United States, from Texas to New Mexico. It grows on limestone rock walls in subalpine to alpine zones and is usually 5 to 15 cm tall. The rhizomes are woody and well branched. The leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, entire, and opposite. pink, labiate flowers at the ends of tubular to funnel-shaped sepals bloom from July to August from the leaf axils.
