ヨーロッパの中部から南部、ロシアの周極地方それに北アメリカの西部に分布しています。標高１２００〜２５００メートルの山地草原や岩礫地などに生え、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、卵形から楕円形の小葉が９〜１０個つきます。７月から８月ごろ、花柄のある穂状花序をだし、赤紫色の蝶形花を咲かせます。

マメ科イワオウギ属の多年草で、学名は Hedysarum obscurum (syn. Hedysarum hedysaroides)。英名はありません。

The Hedysarum obscurum belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to central and southern Europe, arctic Russia and western North America. This herb grows in upland meadows or rock hills 1200-2500 m elevation and can reach 15-30 cm in height. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 9-19 oval to elliptic leaflets. The pedunculate spike are borne and the red-violet papilionaceous flowers bloom from July to August.
