The Helleborus atrorubens belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the northwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula, from Slovenia to Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It grows in forests, mountain foothills, pastures, and grasslands, reaching a height of 30-35 cm. The leaves are pedately compound with 11 to 13 lobes. The lobes are elliptic. From February to March, the scapes extend and reddish-purple to dark purple flowers bloom. The color of the sepals varies greatly, and in rare cases, they become greenish with purple spots or stripes. The leaves die in winter.
