It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southeastern United States from Virginia to Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Similar to Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), it grows to a height of 60 to 150 cm. The leaves are ovate with sharp serrations and long, winged petioles. The bright yellow flower heads bloom from August to October.
