アメリカの中南部、テキサス州からオクラホマ州それに東南部のサウスカロライナ州に分布しています。乾燥した草原などに生え、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。茎の上部でよく分枝し、葉は線形です。４月から７月ごろ、枝先に黄色い頭花を咲かせます。舌状花は８個で下方に反り返り、筒状花は球形になります。

キク科ヘレニウム属の一年草で、学名は Helenium badium。英名は Brown bitterweed、Yellowdicks、Basin sneezeweed。

The Brown bitterweed (Helenium badium) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is distributed in the south-central United States, from Texas to Oklahoma and southeastern South Carolina. It grows in dry prairies and other areas and is 30-45 cm tall. Yellow flower-heads bloom at the ends of the branches from April to July. The eight ray flowers are recurved downward, and the tubular flowers are spherical.
