Heliconia caribaea belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Central America, Puerto Rico, Columbia and Venezuela. This herb grows in humid rainforests or along rivers and can reach 2-3 m in height. The leaves are smooth, leathery and oblong with long leaf stalks. The white and green flowers with red, orange or yellow bracts appear in the long inflorescences from spring through summer. The many cultivars have been raised and they bloom all year.
