中央アメリカのコスタリカが原産です。葉柄が集まった偽茎を形成し、高さは２．５〜４メートルになります。花序は真っ直ぐに伸びます。赤色や黄色に色づくのは苞葉です。写真は苞葉がかなり赤いので、園芸品種の「レッド（cv. Red）」かも知れません。

バショウ科ヘリコニア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heliconia latispatha。英名は Golden lobster claw。

The Golden lobster claw (Heliconia latispatha) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Costa Rica in Central America. It forms a pseudostem with clustered petioles and grows 2.5 to 4 m tall. The inflorescence grows straight. The bract leaves are red or yellow in color. The bract leaves in the photo are quite red, so it may be the garden variety 'Red'.
