南アメリカの北西部と中央アメリカが原産です。根茎性の植物で高さは３〜６メートルほどになります。葉は緑色で大きく、バナナに似ています。花は一年中咲きます。垂れ下がった花苞は濃い赤紫色で、密集して長さは５０センチほどになります。本当の花はピンク色、果実は青色です。

バショウ科ヘリコニア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heliconia mariae。英名は Pendent beefsteak heliconia。

The pendent beefsteak heliconia (Heliconia mariae) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is native in north-west South America and Central America. It is a rhizomatous herb growing up to 3-6 m tall. The leaves are green and large, like that of bananas. The flowers bloom throughout the year. The hanging flower bracts are a deep burgundy red, and are densely packed up to 50 cm long. The true flowers are pink. The fruits are blue.
