南アメリカ北部が原産です。高さは２〜４メートルほどになります。日当たりの良い高温多湿の環境を好み、１５℃以上ないと開花しません。茎の先端に、くすんだ赤紅色の苞が目立つ花穂を下垂させます。花は苞に隠れるようについています。

バショウ科ヘリコニア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heliconia pendula。英名は Pendant heliconia。

The Pendant heliconia (Heliconia pendula) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to northern South America. It grows to a height of 2 to 4 m. It prefers a sunny, hot and humid environment, and will not flower unless the temperature is above 15°C (59°F). At the tip of the stem is a drooping spikelet of flowers with prominent dull reddish-red bracts. The flowers are hidden by the bracts.
