西インド諸島から中央アメリカ、それに南アメリカに分布しています。叢生する品種で、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉は滑らかで革質、長楕円形です。長い葉柄があります。春から夏にかけて、長い花序をだし、赤色の苞のなかに白色と緑色の花を咲かせます。写真は園芸品種の「ジャマイカ」。

The Dwarf Jamaican heiliconia (Heliconia stricta) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Caribbean Islands, Central America and South America. This herb is a clumping species and can reach about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are smooth, leathery and oblong with long leaf stalks. The white and green flowers with red bracts appear in the long inflorescences from spring through summer. The photos are a cultivated variety 'Jamaica'.
