The prairie nymph (Herbertia lahue) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native South America; Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. This herb grows in woodlands and prairies, and can reach 8-15 cm in height. The leaves are linear and mostly basal. The flowers bloom on the stem apices in March to May. The outer tepals are large, spreading, pale violet and white at base, and the inner tepales are small and dark violet.
