The Small-flowered cane (Bothriochloa parviflora) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a pernnial herb that is distributed from Kanto District of Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as in Taiwan, southern Korean Peninsula, China, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia. It grows on hills and mountains in warm climates and is 50 to 80 cm tall. It has thin stems and linear leaves. From July to October it produces a panicle at the top of the stem, which branches two or three times. There are two spikelets on each node, one bisexual spikelet with awn and the other male spikelet without awn. It is called "細柄草" in Taiwanese and "細柄草" (xi bing cao) in Chinese. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
