わが国の本州の日本海側から北海道南部に分布しています。多雪地の海岸から山地に生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。幹の基部は匍匐し、群生します。葉は「あおき（青木）」より小さく倒卵状長楕円形で対生します。雌雄異株で、３月から５月ごろ赤紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は核果で、１月から５月に赤く熟します。

ミズキ科アオキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Aucuba japonica var. borealis。英名はありません。

"Hime-aoki" (Aucuba japonica var. borealis) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from the Sea of Japan side of Honshu to southern Hokkaido. This tree grows from the snowy coast to the mountains and is about 1 meter in height. The base of the trunk is crawling and clusters. The leaves are smaller than the Japanese aucuba and opposite ovate oblong and opposite. It is dioecious and blooms magenta flowers from March to May. The fruits are drupes and ripen red from January to May.
