中国南部からインドシナ半島が原産です。雨林の林内に生え、偽茎は直径５センチ、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉は長楕円形で、長さは１メートルほどです。茎頂に花序を直立してつけ、光沢のある緋色の苞から、橙黄色の花を咲かせます。別名で「びじんしょう（美人蕉）」とも呼ばれます。

バショウ科バショウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Musa coccinea。英名は Scarlet banana。

The scarlet banana (Musa coccinea) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native from south China to the Indi-china Peninsula. This herb grows in rainforests and the pseudostem can reach about 1.5 m in height, 5 cm in diameter. The leaves are oblong about 1 m long. The erect inflorescence is borne on the shoot apex and bloom orange-yellow flowers in the glossy scarlet bracts.
