The Phillip island hibiscus belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a small evergreen tree that is found on Phillip Island near Melbourne, Australia, and on Norfolk Island, 1,700 km northeast of Melbourne. For a long time it was fed to livestock and rabbits and was on the verge of extinction; it is now strictly protected. The leaves are small and ovate with wavy blunt serrations on the edges. The flowers are pale yellowish-white with a red center and are about 10 cm in diameter.
