ハワイの州花として知られる熱帯花木です。「ふよう」や「むくげ」も同じ仲間ですが、ふつうは「ハワイアンハイビスカス」といわれる交配品種群をさします。和名は、「ぶっそうげ（仏桑華）」ですが、葉が「くわ（桑）」に似ているからかもしれません。大阪では、６月から１０月ごろまで花を咲かせます。長く突き出た雌しべが特徴です。

アオイ科フヨウ属の常緑低木で、学名は Hibiscus cv.（属の総称）。英名は Hibiscus。 
The Hibiscus (Hibiscus cv.) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a small everegreen tree that is used to refer to cultivar-groups "Hawaiian hibiscus". It is a state flower of Hawaii. The flowers come in June through October in Osaka. The pistiles are long and protruded from the corolla.
