わが国の固有種で、北海道日高地方のアポイ岳や幌満(ほろまん)岳に分布しています。蛇紋岩地や橄欖岩地の高山帯に生え、高さは10〜25センチになります。葉は2回3出複葉で、はじめは粉白色ですがやがて緑色になります。5月から6月ごろ、茎頂に白い花を咲かせます。花弁は10個ほどで、基部の近くには赤褐色の斑紋があります。 
キンポウゲ科キタダケソウ属の多年草で、学名は Callianthemum miyabeanum。英名はありません。 
"Hidaka-so" (Callianthemum miyabeanum) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed to Mt. Apoi and Mt. Horoman in the Hidaka region of Hokkaido. It grows in alpine zones on serpentine and peridotite rocky terrain and is 10-25 cm tall. It has 2 times triternate compound leaves, which are powder white at first and eventually turn green. There are about 10 petals with reddish-brown spots near the base.
