わが国の本州、東北地方以南から四国・九州に分布しています。野生種はないそうです。「えどひがん」の近縁で、ほかのサクラより早くお彼岸のころに開花します。花は淡紅色の５弁花で、つぼみのときは鮮やかな紅色です。萼筒はつぼ形で、くびれた部分が長いのが特徴です。５月から６月ごろ、小さな果実が黒紫色に熟します。別名で「こひがんざくら（小彼岸桜）」とも呼ばれます。

バラ科サクラ属の落葉中高木で、学名は Prunus subhirtella。英名は Rosebud cherry。

The rosebud cherry (Prunus subhirtella) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distrubuted southward from Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. There is no wild species. It is closely related to "Edohigan" (Prunus pendula f. ascendens), and bloom in Spring equinotial week sooner than other cherry blossoms. The flowers are five-petaled, pale rose pink and the buds are bright rose pink. The calyx tubes are urceolate with long constricted parts. The small fruits ripen blackish-purple in May through June.
