The Japanese glorybower (Clerodendrum japonicum) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from India to Southeast Asia, Taiwan and southern China. In Japan, it has become naturalized in southern Kyushu, Okinawa, and the Ogasawara Islands. It grows 1 to 3 m tall, and its broadly ovate leaves grow in opposite pairs, like those of the Foxglove tree. The corolla has five lobes, and the stamens and style protrude. It is called "龍船花" in Taiwanese Chinese and "赬桐" (cheng tong) in Chinese.
