中国南部、またはわが国の温帯から亜温帯地域が起源と考えられています。マダケ属のなかでも最も小型で、枝が水平近くにでます。桿の節間は１０〜１８センチほどで、短毛に被われています。桿の色ははじめ紫色がかった緑色ですが、のちに黄緑色に変わります。

イネ科マダケ属のタケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys humilis。英名は Leafy bamboo。

The Leafy bamboo (Phyllostachys humilis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bamboo that is probably native to southern China or the temperate to subtemperate zone of Japan. It is a most small bamboo of whangees. The branches spread out almost on the level. The internodes of culm are 10-18 cm long and covered with short hairs. The culms are purplish green at first and turn into yellowish green later.
