わが国をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の岩の割れ目や巨岩の基部などに生え、高さは１０〜６０センチになります。茎は直立あるいはときに弓なりになり、淡褐色の鱗片に被われます。葉は羽状複葉で、長楕円形から披針形、鎌形の羽片がつきます。別名で「ひいらぎでんだ（柊連朶）」とも呼ばれます。

オシダ科イノデ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Polystichum lonchitis。英名は Northern holly fern。

The Northern holly fern (Polystichum lonchitis) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed widely all over Japan and the Northern Hemisphere. This fern grows in subalpine to alpine rock crevices or at base of boulders and can reach 10-60 cm in height. The stem is erect to occasionally ascending and covered with light brown scales. The fronds are pinnate with oblong to lanceolate to falcate pinnae.
