わが国の本州、中部地方以北と九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国東北部、シベリアに分布しています。海岸や山地の草地に生え、高さは５〜１５センチになります。地下茎を伸ばして群生します。葉は長楕円形から楕円形です。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋から１〜２個、小さな鐘状の花を下垂して咲かせます。「あまどころ」を小さくしたような植物で、和名は「あまどころ」の中国名「萎蕤（いずい）」によります。

The Dwarf Solomon's seal (Polygonatum humile) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, north-eastern China and Siberia. This herb grows in coastal or montane grasslands and can reach 5-15 cm in height. It spreads by rhizomes. The leaves are oblong to elliptic. The small 1-2 bell-shaped, drooping flowers come in the axils from May to June. It is a plant that looks like a smaller version of "Solomon's seal", and its Japanese name comes from the Chinese name "萎蕤".
