わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山地の湿り気の多い落葉樹林などに生え、高さは５〜１２センチになります。地下茎を伸ばして広がります。葉は長卵形から長三角形で、先端は尖り基部は心形です。４月から５月にかけて、まばらに白色の花を咲かせます。側弁と唇弁には、紅紫色の細い筋があります。

スミレ科スミレ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Viola yezoensis。英名はありません。

"Hikage-sumire" (Viola yezoensis) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in wet mountane deciduous forests and can reach 5-12 cm in height. It spreads by rhizomes. The leaves are long ovate to long triangular with acute tips and cordate bases. The sparingly white flowers come in April to May. The lateral and labial petals have narrow magenta spripes.
