わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。日当たりの良い山地に生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。葉は卵形で葉柄には翼があり対生します。９月から１０月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から大きな穂状花序をだし、淡紫色の小さな花を咲かせます。上唇は反り返って立ち、下唇は舟形で突き出します。個体によって長雄蘂・短花柱と短雄蘂・長花柱の２型があります。名前は、弘法大師が倒れていた修験者に葉の絞り汁を飲ませたところ、元気になったという言い伝えから。別名で「えんめいそう（延命草）」とも呼ばれ、百草丸などの原料にされます。

シソ科ヤマハッカ属の多年草で、学名は Rabdosia japonica（syn. Isodon japonicus）。英名はありません。

"Hikiokoshi" (Rabdosia japonica) belongs to the Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in sunny mountains and can reach about 1 m in height. The leaves are ovate and opposite with winged petioles. The spikes are born on the stem apices and leaf axils, and bloom small pale purple flowers from September to October. The upper lip is recurving and erect, and the lower lip is boat-shaped and exserted. It has two types of flower, the one is long-stamens and short-style, the another is short-stames and long-style. The leaves are used as a basic ingredient of herbal medicine.
