The Striped leatherwood (Berchemia lineata) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is an evergreen woody vine that is distributed throughout the Nansei Islands of Japan, as well as in Taiwan, southern China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. It grows on coastlines, rocky areas in limestone regions, open fields, and grasslands; it is semi-climbing and reaches a height of about 2 m. The stems branch profusely from the base and either creep along the ground or grow obliquely upward. The leaves are ovate to oblong, with rounded or slightly indented tips and entire margins; they are arranged alternately. From spring to fall, it produces white flowers in corymbs from the leaf axils and in racemes at the branch tips. The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens to a reddish to dark purple color; it is sweet and sour and edible. It is known as "小葉黃鱔藤" in Taiwanese Chinese and "鐵包金" (tie bao jin) in Chinese.
