The Littleleaf lilac (Syringa microphylla) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to northern and northeastern China. Its standard Japanese name is "áâŒ{’š‰Ô" (Chabo-hashidoi), but it is usually called "•Pƒ‰ƒCƒ‰ƒbƒN" (Hime-lilac). It produces small round or ovate-shaped leaves and small reddish-purple flowers from April to May. It seems to be more tolerant of heat than the common lilac. In Chinese, it is called "¬—tI—æ‰Ô" (xiao ye qiao ling hua).
