"Hime-azami" (Cirsium buergeri) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Kinki region of Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows in fields and mountains, reaching 1-2 m in height. The stems and cauline leaves are thin and slender overall. The leaves are oblong, pinnately lobed with shallow or medium lobes, and enfold the stem at the base. Pale purple-red flower heads bloom at the tops of stems and branch tips from August to October. The flower heads are bracteolate, and the bracts are tubular. The bracts have arachnoid hairs and do not recline.
