"Hime-baramomi" (Picea maximowiczii) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is a specialty of Japan and is distributed in Mt. Yatsugatake, the Chichibu Mountains and the northern part of the Southern Alps in Honshu. It grows from mountainous areas to subalpine zones in 1000 to 2000 m above sea level, and reaches a height of 45 m. The canopy is conical and the bark is taupe. The leaves are thick, short and linear, about 6 to 13 mm long, and have a rhombic cross section. Anemophily blooms in June and cones mature in October. The cones are 3-8 cm long and 1.4-2 cm wide.
