The eastern Cape blue cycad (Encephalartos horridus) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. This shrub grows in arid shrublands, most commonly on ridges and slopes, and up to a height of 1 m. The leaves are up to 1 m long, pinnately compound with stiff, spiny leaflets. The younger leaves are a silvery-blue color but turn green with age. Both male and female cones are produced. They are usually brownish- or blackish-red with a dense layer of fine hair.
