わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに四国にも分布しています。高山の岩礫地や草地に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で互生し、茎の上部では５輪生します。６月から７月ごろ、上部の葉腋から放射状に枝をだし、枝先に苞葉と小さな杯状花序をつけます。花は黄褐色で、半月形をした４個の腺体があります。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の多年草で、学名は Euphorbia sieboldiana var. montana。英名はありません。

"Hime-natsu-toudai" (Euphorbia sieboldiana var. montana) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido and Shikoku. This herb grows in alpine screes and grasslands, and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The leaves are oblong, alternate and fives whorled at the upper stems. The branches are borne radially at the upper axils from June to July. The small cyathia and bracts are produced at the terminal branches. The flowers are yellowish brown and have four harf-moon secretory portions.
