The "Hime-mitsuba-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron nudipes var. gracilescens) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small decidous tree that is found only in a limited area in the northwestern part of Kyushu, Japan. This is a variety of the "Saigoku-mitsuba-tsutsuji". It grows in sunny woodlands and rocky areas near mountain peaks and reaches a height of 1 to 2 m. The leaves are rhombic and grow in whorls of three at the tips of the branches. From around April to May, reddish-purple flowers bloom at the branch tips as the leaves unfurl. The corolla is small, about 3 cm in diameter, with a gradient that is lighter at the center and darker toward the edges. The fruit is a capsule, which is also extremely small.
