わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州に分布しています。山地のやや日陰の林内に生え、高さは４０〜１００センチになります。葉は卵状楕円形で対生し、縁には尖った重鋸歯、やや翼のある葉柄があります。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に円錐花序をだし、暗赤紫色の花を疎らに咲かせます。花冠は上唇が２裂し、下唇は３裂します。花柄には腺毛が生えます。

ゴマノハグサ科ゴマノハグサ属の多年草で、学名は Scrophularia duplicato-serrata。英名はありません。

"Hinano-usutsubo" (Scrophularia duplicato-serrata) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Kanto-district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This herb grows in shade forests and it can reach 40-100 cm in height. The leaves are ovate-elliptic with acute doubly serrate margins and short wingged petioles, and arranged in opposite. The sparse, dark magenta flowers bloom in panicles atop of stems from July and September. The corolla consistes of bilobate upper lip and three-lobed lower lip. The glandular hairs bear on the peduncles.
