The "Hina-sumire" (Viola takedana) belongs to Violaceae (the Violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native from southern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku and northern Kyushu in Japan. This herb grows primarily in mountains on the Pacific Ocean Side of Honshu, and it can reach 3-8 cm in height. The leaves are deltoid-ovate with deep cordate bases and wavy coarsely toothed edges. The surface of leaf is dark green and the abaxial side is tinged purple, rarely pale green. The pale rose pink flowers bloom from April to May. The throat of flower is white and the lateral petals are lightly bearded. The labial petal has magenta veins.
