The Ivy-leaved duckweed (Lemna trisulca) belongs to Lemnaceae (the Duckweed family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed throughout Japan and around the world. It grows in lakes, marshes, ponds, spring-fed pools, and rivers, typically forming dense clusters that intertwine underwater. The thalli are ovate-elliptical in shape; new leaf-like structures sprout perpendicularly from both sides and connect via slender stalks to form a cluster. Its Japanese name was derived from the resemblance of these interconnected thalli to the Chinese character for "品". Although it blooms in summer, flowering is extremely rare, and there have been no recorded observations of it in Japan. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "品藻", and in Chinese, it is known as "品藻" (pinzao).
