ヨーロッパの中・南部に分布しています。標高２８００メートルまでの牧草地や岩場に生え。高さは３０センチ以上になります。葉は羽状複葉で、線形から長楕円形の小葉が３〜８対つきます。４月から６月ごろ、長い花茎を伸ばして黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は捩れた節果で、蹄鉄のような分果となります。

マメ科ヒッポクレピス属の多年草で、学名は Hippocrepis comosa。英名は Horseshoe vetch。

The horseshoe vetch (Hippocrepis comosa) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to central and southern Europe. This herb grows in meadows and stony places, to 2800 m elevation, and can reach up to 30 cm in height. The leaves are pinnate compound with 3-8 pairs of linear to oblong leaflets. The yellow flowers bloom in long-stalked clusters from April to June. The fruits are twisting loments with horseshoe-shaped mericarps.
